Why becoming a purpose-driven leader will allow your company to prosper

Being a purpose driven leader can make the difference between your staff working for you and working with you. If you can’t find the purpose of the company, how do you expect your staff to know their own purpose?

 

It’s easy to be profit-driven, of course. After all, a company’s main purpose often is to make the most profit. However, it takes more than the figures to boost morale in the workplace. Your staff can have more passion for the job if they feel like they’re doing it with a purpose – and that purpose begins with leadership.

 

The most important thing to do is to look at your company and think ‘what do we offer as a company?’. Rather than seeing your café as somewhere that sells coffee to customers, for example, see it as a place where friends can reconnect, or where people can stop to feel refreshed before a long day at work. Looking at what the product provides, rather than what product you sell, will change the purpose of working for the company.

 

One thing you need to do when becoming a purpose-driven leader is separate your own purpose from the purpose of your company. Your own purpose may be to own the company to make a living, but that isn’t the purpose of the company as a whole. Not everyone who works for you are there simply to make money – they are there because they enjoy being in work or have a passion for the sector you are in. Your company’s purpose relates back to the question you asked yourself earlier – what do you offer?

 

Becoming a purpose-driven leader means connecting with your staff. Don’t be a mysterious figure that is always in the office; be approachable, make yourself known and get stuck into whatever work you can. Your staff will feel more valued and have more of a purpose if they feel like they can work with the leadership rather than avoid them.
